Comprehensive Eye Exams in a Friendly Environment

Combining state-of-the-art diagnostic technology with over three decades of experience in the eye care world we examine the visual components of the eye (e.g. nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, etc.) as well as the eye health. In most cases a dilated fundus (back of the eye) examination (DFE) will be performed to evaluate all of the visible structures of the eye and determine the tendency towards progression to eye disease (e.g. glaucoma, high blood pressure changes, etc.). A complete refraction will be performed to determine not only the prescription necessary to give quality distance vision but the impact on the “comfort “of the vision by that prescription. The refraction will determine the need for a prescription for near work that may be in some cases totally different from the distance prescription. A complete slit lamp examination (SLE) will be performed to determine, among other things, the health of the front of the eye (cornea) and the potential to have eye pressure problems (glaucoma). There will be automated equipment used before you see the doctor that will analyze the prescription, curvature of the cornea and in some cases the surface topography of the cornea.

Testing ServicesTesting Services

We offer computerized visual field testing and digital retinal imaging, which may be indicated by a patient’s symptoms (flashing lights, seeing spots, etc.), physical health (diabetes, hypertension, etc.), eye health (elevated eye pressure, blood vessel leakage, etc.) or family history (glaucoma, retinal detachment, etc.).

Referral Services

If necessary Dr. Sterling’s office will identify the appropriate specialist for your particular case (e.g. High blood pressure changes in the retina referred to an internist). There are other specialists that we will refer you to because these are not specialties we are equipped to perform (low vision, vision training, diseased corneas, etc.). Routine referrals will be made to retinal specialists, glaucoma specialists, general practitioners, pediatricians, oculoplastic specialists, cosmetic surgeons, cataract and LASIK (refractive) surgeries.  The office referrals will be to providers of care that are experts in their field and will treat you and your particular problem with care and respect.

Management of Eye Surgery

Those patients that require surgical intervention (cataract, glaucoma, LASIK, etc.) will be co-managed through our office and the surgeon’s office. We will be performing postoperative care while communicating between the two offices to give you the most convenient, quality care you deserve. The surgeons that our office suggests have superior outcomes and offer you state-of-the-art facilities and procedures.

Low Vision Rehabilitation – A Team Approach
As the population continues to age, eye diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy are increasing in prevalence.  Many of these people reach a point when their eye care professionals tell them there is nothing else medically to be done to help. These patients are left with reduced vision, or Low Vision, which cannot be improved with regular eye glasses or contact lenses. Patients may then require the intervention of a low Vision eye doctor. Low Vision specialists do not perform surgery or prescribe medical treatments. Their expertise is prescribing specially designed lenses and vision devices while working in conjunction with the patient’s current retina specialist, ophthalmologist or optometrist.

A Low Vision doctor carefully measures a person’s vision and evaluates the different categories of Low Vision aids for each individual’s goals. The patient will  work with lenses and devices with a Low Vision trained occupational therapist. This permits the patient to evaluate all options and find the correct aide to enhance their vision.

Astorino Vision Rehabilitation is one of the first facilities to utilize the combination of a Low Vision eye doctor and occupational therapist.

The doctors and occupational therapists at Astorino Vision Rehabilitation are trained specialists who have dedicated their lives to properly helping people with Low Vision.
